1853
In 1853, American chef George Crum accidentally baked the very first potato chips. A guest thought his baked potatoes were cut too thick and sent them back to the kitchen. Crum then sliced the potatoes so thin that they could no longer be eaten with a fork. These potato slices were so tasty that they were permanently put on the menu.
1994
You can't imagine it now, but at the end of the 1950s hardly anyone in the Netherlands had heard of chips. Chips only came to the Netherlands and Belgium when potato farmer Gerrard Kistemaker was looking for a way to sell even more potatoes. He learned how to make chips from the English chip salesman Frank Smith.
Together they then set up the first Dutch chips factory in Broek op Langedijk. The name Smiths is therefore due to one of these founders; Frank Smith. This factory is still used to make chips!
1998
After the Netherlands, Belgium is also introduced to chips and knows how to taste these savory snacks. In 1966, the first stones were laid in Nieuwkerke for a small-scale snacks factory.
2001
The old trusted potato chips are now on the shelves under the brand name Lay's. The cheerful snacks, such as Hamka's, Wokkels, Nibb-it, Chipito and Bugles can still be found in the shops under the Smiths brand.
2004
Lay's launches the Make your Smaak campaign and offers consumers the opportunity to come up with their own taste. Bicky Crisp is the winner!
